 Baton Rouge is the capital of the US state of Louisiana, but is somewhat overshadowed by New Orleans. The name comes from the first Europeans who entered the area in 1699 - they were French. The city has about 230,000 inhabitants. Baton Rouge is the most inland city on the Mississippi River that can be reached by oceangoing vessels. The petrochemical industry is the largest here - ExxonMobile, for example, operates the second largest oil refinery in the USA. |
